I got to talk about one of my favorite biblical themes in the sermon this past Sunday. (listen here.) That is adoption. I love that theme because, as I said in the sermon, it weaves together two facets of our salvation, the legal and, as the Puritans would say, experimental—that is something we actually experience and live out in our day to day lives. If we appreciate the legal without the experimental, our salvation will become cold and academic. But if we appreciate the experimental without the legal, we will experience the Christian life as a roller coaster ride, where we go up and down depending on to what degree we feel like God’s children. We need the once-for-all legal understanding of our justification and legal adoption to ground our identity in Christ. And then we need to experience that understanding of ourselves as God’s children in every increasing degrees.
Here are some resources that I found helpful.
